by Parris Fallgatter
Hi! My name is Parris Fallgatter. When I was first asked by the editor of WWWiz to write a column, I must admit I was somewhat skeptical of the idea. I had just been introduced to the World Wide Web merely weeks earlier! Now I can see things beginning to work out. I am 14, and when my dad first introduced me to the Web, I thought, "Nahhh. That stuff's not for me."
"You'll be surprised," he said. "Just punch something in." I reluctantly stared at the screen, then finally gave in and typed "Nintendo" into the InfoSeek. I followed one of the links and a blazing title screen (Nintendo's home page) appeared after about five seconds. I was astounded. I instantly realized I was going to love the Web and all the things made possible through it.
Since this is the first edition of WWWiz, I think it is necessary for me to explain the wonders and magic available to you through the World Wide Web. My column is meant to basically explain what things may be of interest to you, and the sites at which they can be found.
The Web has nearly unlimited sites for audiences of all ages. The popular belief going around is that the Web is not an area meant for kids. What kind of statement is that? The WWW is constantly growing at a tremendous rate, and millions of computers log on to the Web every day! This means the kids' area is also quickly expanding. There are thousands of things that each and every one of you could find interesting.
My job is to point these things out. For those of you who think you're too young for the WWW, or that you'll never find what you're looking for, or even that it is too complicated, think again! Others think the Web is boring. Certainly not!! The Web has more information than you can even begin to dream of, and can even be the key to school reports! Just poke in the phrase you're looking for (using Netscape InfoSeek or other Web search engines), and in about five seconds you're presented with seemingly unlimited areas at which the requested information can be found. But the Web isn't all school reports and information. Once you have the WWW, your computer is like an unfathomable playground. Do whatever you like! Look up anything and everything you can think of. Just remember: the WWW definitely holds something for you.
On the WWW there are sites that range anywhere from video games, to E-zines, to materials that can make your school reports as easy as pie. I have listed some Web sites that may interest you. To check them out, just punch in an address. Here you go:
